The arrival of the uneasy Cletis Fullernoy brings unwelcome news and threatens Roy’s carefully guarded view of his life.

The story is set in 1938 and concerns eight famous women from different historical periods who all are interned in the same insane asylum. The women are — or at least believe they are — author Gertrude Stein, martyr Joan of Arc, activist Susan B. Anthony, politician Queen Isabella I of Spain, Constanze Mozart (wife of the famed composer), pilot Amelia Earhart, silent-film actress Pearl White, and explorer Osa Johnson. Together, they form a committee to address an urgent crisis: an anticipated, violent attack from the hospital's men's ward. Hoping to launch a pre-emptive strike, the women attempt to formulate a coherent plan. However, the meeting quickly descends into absurd arguments, personal rivalries, and surreal non-sequiturs. All the while, a patronising doctor and his staff monitor the patients, manipulating their paranoia for institutional control. In a desperate bid to prove their unity they do the unthinkable.
